Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract caused by an overactive immune system, which increases mucus production and swelling in lung airways. The resulting "bronchospasm" blocks the lungs, resulting in persistent wheezing and coughing. Asthma attacks may be triggered by a variety of stimuli, the nature of which varies from individual to individual. Upper respiratory infections, either viral or bacterial, often trigger an asthma attack. Exposures to tobacco smoke, perfumes, paints or other strong chemical odors are often culprits. Changes in weather or temperature, exposure to molds, animal danders, grass or tree pollens are all triggers for some asthmatic patients.

I have had Asthma since I was a young child.

My Asthma was triggered by everything. As a child I was always sick with Bronchitis at least 4 times during the year, usually at change of season. I was seven the first time I had Pneumonia. Pneumonia is a serious infection or inflammation of the lungs. The air sacs in the lungs fill with pus and other liquid. Oxygen has trouble reaching your blood. If there is too little oxygen in your blood, your body cells can't work properly. Because of this and the spread of infection through the body pneumonia can cause death.-

Over the years I had tried medications ranging from every inhaler that was on the market to powerful steroids. I was thirteen the last time I had Pneumonia. I spent a couple of weeks in the hospital and I was absent from school for three months. When I was discharged from the hospital I was told that one lung had a very small amount of fluid remaining from the viral infection. I was on strict schedule at home. Medication was administered the same time every day; I was on the Nebulizer morning and night. I medicated the moment I awoke in the morning and before I went to bed for the night. My parents were very attentive to my needs and expressed a deep concern when I told them that I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life taking prescription drugs. Shortly after my fourteenth birthday I just wanted to give up. I truly felt that I would never be well and I wished for another form of treatment.

It was during this time that my father had started to visit a Chiropractor after a serious accident. He was helped tremendously and so my parents suggested that I try Chiropractic. I had Chiropractic care three times per week for the first year. After about two years I continued with visits once a week to properly maintain my newfound state of health. In conjunction with Chiropractic care I was also treated with Massage Therapy. The effects of both modalities were almost immediate in regards to Asthma. I felt more relaxed, I was able to breathe more freely and the tight feeling that was always in my chest diminished.

After the first two years of Massage Therapy and Chiropractic my Asthma nearly vanished. The amount of medication dropped to the use of just my inhaler. As of today, I haven’t taken any medication for Asthma in the last several years. I still visit the Chiropractor and receive Massage Therapy.
